Thursday, August 19 - Field Trip to Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

Location of the symposium is Colorado Mountain College, Chaffee County Academic Center27900 Cty Rd 319 (about 1/2 mile from Rodeo Grounds)

We are pleased to announce that Walt Wright, one of the world's foremost experts in Paleobotany, will be attending this year's Rock Show at Buena Vista, Colorado. Mr. Wright has consented to give one of his much sought after symposiums after the show. This is a great honor for us since Mr. Wright is a national speaker and is booked several months in advance. He has conducted petrified wood seminars and given lectures at gem and mineral shows all over the United States for the past fifteen years.

Mr. Wright dismisses, with a chuckle, questions about the degrees he holds in his field and states that he has some but they aren't all that important. We do know that his credentials include a Bachelor of Science from California State University at Fullerton and a Master of Science from the University of California at Riverside. He has also worked for the U. S. Forest Service and the University of California. Mr. Wright has consulted with various government agencies and has done extensive writing on the subject of petrified wood. He wrote a chapter on the Triassic Chinle Formation on fossil woods in 2002, and has authored the "Secrets of Petrified Plants" in both English and German.

Mr. Wright tells us his passion for petrified wood started when his mother gave him his first specimen at the age of ten. Since that early age, Walt has amassed one of the largest collections of petrified wood in the world.

The fee for attending the symposium is $75.00 per person. This will include admittance to the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Please call to ensure a space at the symposium. We are limited to thirty people in the classroom. All attendees may bring up to three specimens of petrified wood to be identified.
